The Barrie Historical Association is celebrating its 10th Anniversary!

Close to 100 members and guests turned out for our 10th Annual Meeting and Anniversary Celebrations the Aladdin Banquet Hall on April 13.  Several creative visual displays documenting our accomplishments in the past 10 years were skillfully put together and displayed for all to view.  Mary and Al Cuzen did a superb job in creating these wonderful displays.

Honoured guests included Patrick Brown, M.P. and Kevin Lepage, Acting Mayor.  A “mystery guest” in the person of our Town Crier, Steve Travers, entertained us with a slide presentation and commentary on life in the 18th Century in London, England.  Our two Co-Presidents, John Trott and John Bearcroft did a very credible job in chairing the meeting and making this a very pleasant evening.  A big thank you to all who assisted with our celebration.

Our 10th Anniversary Historical Project:

Six historical plaques commemorating Barrie’s history will be permanently displayed along the waterfront walk.  The plaques will be mounted on a steel frame and placed in a cement footing.  A photograph and narration will be featured on each plaque, which commemorates a former business that operated in Barrie.  This project was done in cooperation with the City of Barrie, who will install and maintain the plaques.  As approved earlier this year by the membership, the BHA financed the cost of the plaques ($5000).  The dedication and unveiling of the first plaque will take place on “Celebrate Barrie Day”, June 3rd, on the stage at Centennial Park at 11:00 a.m.

A brochure is being designed to inform the public of the location of the plaques on the waterfront.  The six plaques will feature the following:  The Allandale Train Station, Barrie Tannery, Ice Harvesting on Lake Simcoe, Barrie Carriage Works, Barrie Gas Works, and Memorial Square.

On the same day, June 3rd, the BHA will also present the Honour Roll Awards for celebrating and promoting the history of Barrie.  The three recipients of the award are:

Rogers Television (Cable 10 Division), Aim Realty (for picture display and booklet), and The Sarjeant Company (for their historical calendars).

The Allandale Train Station:

Good News!  At the end of June, the City of Barrie will again take possession of the train station and the surrounding 10 acres.  The fence will remain for protection and security surveillance will continue during the evening hours.  A public meeting regarding the future of this parcel of land, and the station, will be held on June 5th at City Hall in the Council Chambers.  Please plan to attend and support the BHA’s suggestions and concerns that will be presented by Mark Fisher of our Executive.

Mark your calendars with our future meetings!
